Lance Cpl. Christopher Heatherington, combat engineer with Combat Logistics Battalion 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and a native of Fairbury, Ill., attempts to cheat off a neighboring fourth-grader during a multiplication test here, Oct. 10. Taking a break from their engineering civil affair project at the elementary school, the Marines interacted with the students in class. The ENCAP is one of multiple humanitarian civil affairs projects conducted by the 31st MEU throughout the island of Palawan during the Amphibious Landing Exercise in the Philippines. PHIBLEX, now in its 29th iteration, is an annually-scheduled exercise between the U.S. and Philippine forces, aimed at strengthening military-to-military interoperability and bilateral relationships.

The moments of peace like this are exactly what we're fighting for. I don't care if you disagree with the politicians, the high-up mucky-mucks who make stupid decisions. The SOLDIERS who risk their lives in the name of peace and justice deserve to be honored.

Outstanding photograph, packed with fun.  That girl looks like she's having a good time, and I know for a fact that Marine is.  :)  Colorful, great composition, and a wonderfully captured moment overall.  Thanks for posting great photos like this, despite the backlash you might get on DA.

Oi! To all you people saying nasties! Stop being freaking trolls! This is a nice picture! Stop saying "all these kids were shot dead" "the US military is bad" blah blah blah...seriously? Get your facts before you all judge people. Saying something is bad is an opinion not a fact.

RANT OVER

"[...] better I leave. praying. for world peace." - Well then, you do that. In the meantime, the US and others are _actually doing_ something to protect peace. Of course, there are mistakes that happened in the past. However, the fact still stands that for the past 80+ years the US has been one of few nations to pull their head out of their metaphorical arses and actually fight.

Most importantly though, no matter how you look at the US and any other army: please remember to distinguish the normal soldier from the administration they're getting their orders from. Soldiers are human beings as well, and that's exactly what this photo shows. So please start your political debates else where (this isn't the right forum for that anyways), and have some goddamn respect - if not for the uniform, then at least for the guys and gals inside those uniforms.

Please and thank you.

If you have something negative to say, keep it to yourself please. You do not have to persuade anyone else, there are people on this website who have the same opinion. Also, just to say that was quite offensive to both my countries. The Philippines needs help from time to time, and it's great to know that the US would want to help. I know, it's annoying to hear that we interfere with other countries when we don't have to get into, I hate it as well. But this one is different if you HAVE gone to the Philippines.
