Lance Cpl. Christopher Heatherington, combat engineer with Combat Logistics Battalion 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and a native of Fairbury, Ill., attempts to cheat off a neighboring fourth-grader during a multiplication test here, Oct. 10. Taking a break from their engineering civil affair project at the elementary school, the Marines interacted with the students in class. The ENCAP is one of multiple humanitarian civil affairs projects conducted by the 31st MEU throughout the island of Palawan during the Amphibious Landing Exercise in the Philippines. PHIBLEX, now in its 29th iteration, is an annually-scheduled exercise between the U.S. and Philippine forces, aimed at strengthening military-to-military interoperability and bilateral relationships.

I love it! Love I believe that this truly happened (unlike what other people think that this is just a made-up...:( (Sad) ) because there IS really an annual exercise between the US and Philippine forces in Palawan (I always hear it from the news). It is such a heartwarming photograph and I would like to thank you for capturing this moment. Hug

Since half of everyone is whining...

Those are coveralls. Mil wear coveralls when doing a lot of the dirty work that would ruin uniforms.

Description says they're "Taking a break from their engineering civil affair project at the elementary school..." So if the coveralls are dirty or the sleeves are poorly rolled, I would we can all understand that. If not, you've never worked construction, much less construction in a 3rd world country for the military.

why does he not have either name tape on his blouse, where is his rank, wtf is that above his left breast pocket, and why does he have the shittiest sleeves rolled ever

tldr - probably not an actual Marine, just a stock photo with someone who tries to pull off the look with stuff bought from surplus stores

They're mil coveralls. Dirty and poorly rolled due to the contruction type work they're taking a break from. Since you're an expert, you probably already noticed that though.

Yeah, you're totally right. He went through the trouble of finding an outfit that looks like a Marine's, got his buddies together, flew them to a foreign country, and found a school that would let them take pictures with school children to post online to his DeviantArt account dedicated to pictures of Marines. Anything for those sweet, sweet favorites.

You can't see it from this pic, but the guy's rank is on his collar. He's not advertising his name and rank for all the world to see because, well, there IS a Muslim insurgency in the P.I. (not particularly on Palawan, but pretty thick nearby on Mindanao) and the honchos never know when somebody might recognize a commanding officer (or mistake a lance cpl for one) and take a shot at them. Therefore, no overt rank and insignia. That also explains "WTF" is above his left breast pocket. It's velcro, where his name would affix.
Why does he have the "shittiest sleeves rolled ever"? That I can't answer...:)

Hah because he's a lance corporal. But no, they were digging a huge pit for another septic tank, so your sleeves'll get a little screwed up digging all day.

Maybe it is a uniform for casual occasions idk. They work real hard to keep us safe. I don't care what they are wearing, just so long as they are safe (the marine behind is wearing a shirt sleeved shirt anyways).

Oh I forgot, they hardly do it in boots-on-the-ground operations. Now they just send drones.

I made this account because my friend told me about you and you sound like a stuck up bit*h and judging from the comments I read I was right. Your so full of sh*t you know that. How the h*ll can you say that to the people keeping your dirty a*s safe? Government puppets? I'm betting that you are a worker or a boss of something. YOU aren't any different from them you stuck up bit*h. if your a worker your doing what your boss tells you, so YOUR the puppet, if your a boss of some sort then your no different from the government. Oh and do you know what we work for? It's the government you stup*d a*s. If you don't have anything good to say to those people just fu*k off and don't even think about posting stup*d sh*t like that. You know what I bet you don't even have the courage to go defend our country, because while courageous people like them are out there risking their lives for us your sitting there on your stup*d a*s talking sh*t about them. Well, I can talk sh*t about you too, you fu*king bit*h. God, I want to punch that stup*d face of yours!

I should feel honored if you have gone to such lenghts to...  wait, what exactly are you trying to achieve here? I quickly lose interest in a convo when people go into bitching rants and ad hominem attacks. I'm sorry that you have wasted all that time on stooping down to my level. Must be a great disappointment to you.

I don't mind stooping down to your level because unlike you who just sits on their a*s saying sh*t to people who are the reason that your alive. Do you know the burden they carry every time they shot someone to death? No, you don't, and unlike you I KNOW what it feels like. I'll ask you something. Do you have a family or someone you care for? and would YOU do anything to protect them even if it meant killing someone? Well, that's what they are doing but on a wider scale, they are risking their lives for your sake EVEN THOUGH they don't know who you are. What gives you the right to say all that stuff about them? I will tell you this, I am a 14 year old who has shoot a person before because I had to do it to protect my family because it was either them or my family. I want to go into the military and BE a "government dog" so I can protect people in my country by any means possible, even if it means taking someone else's life battle. They become "government dogs" knowing all the consequences of their actions and it makes me sad that what their going through to protect us is being talked about by people like you. Violence is not always the answer, and violence will never be the right answer, but sometimes it's the only way. I understand why you say soldiers are like that, I really do, but you also have to try to understand why they are doing those things.

There we go, "ignorant and stupid". I guess,  that's what they teach you. Phrases you use to win the war for someone's mind, a psychological warfare. Well, dude, it doesn't work for everybody - accept it.

What does it have to do with Philippines? You want to create an image of the "helping" "lovy-dovy" army. "Oh, we help children".
And then you all sing:
EVERYTHING IS AWESOOOOOOOOME!!!

They didn't teach me anything. I am just not some numbnuts who thinks all soldiers are killers. Hell most people in the military aren't even in a Combat Role.
The guy in the pic, guess what, he is LOGISTICS.
They don't fight unless fired upon. Their job is to provide supplies to those who need it, regardless if they are Military or Civilian.

Educate yourself before you wreck yourself.

Some people just don't have respect for the people that are trying to keep the US clean and safe. They just sit in their houses browsing on their phones and relaxing in the sun, but they don't realize why they can do that. They can do that because people are constantly trying to protect this babied and sheltered country. The soldiers blowing up buildings don't love to do it, they have to do it. It's not really their personal choice. When they do things like that, the don't think just about the present, but the future. Besides, other countries are killing our people, imprisoning them, and torturing them to death. Terrorists attacked us in 9/11. People might say that was a long time ago, but in reality with the timeline, it wasn't. What do people think when they hear that the soldiers coming back home need rehab? It's not because they're "violent" or "need to settle down", it's because they can't live with themselves because of what they've had to go through and do. People need to have the experience of fighting for freedom, giving their lives and futures away, for the spoiled brats back home, before they talk bad about the military. They don't know anything.

Yeah, most people don't even realise that most soldiers aren't even fighters. They are mechanics, Clerks, administrators, engineers, etc.

It is funny. Most people still see WW2 vets, some who were ordered to level entire cities, heroes. Yet one modern soldier accidently kills someone by mistaking them for a suicide bomber and suddenly he is a monster.

"Military are dumb animals to be used for the US foreign policy"
Do you know who said that? Good old Henry Kissinger. I may have butchered that quote a little (quoting it from memory). Do you honestly think that the boys and girls are sent halfway across the world to fight some just wars, defending their Fatherland and their loved ones? How naive are you trying to be? They are sent by the bankers, politicians and corporations to protect their interests.
Find out how they are treated when they come back. The VA puts them on "no treatment" lists, they get PTSD label and their rights are taken away from them.
If you really care so much about the military, ask yourself how much do you really know about these and similar issures - before you start shooting your mouth off about someone "disrespecing the military".
